The Importance of Electrical Safety

electricity-safety-presentationHaving worked many manual labor jobs, I’ve sat through many OSHA-style presentations. Many of them go over ridiculous, commonsense parameters such as how to properly stand on a ladder and wash a paintbrush. Despite the fact that much of the material in these presentations is superfluous, the electricity safety presentation is important.

Many of us remember lighting up a bulb with a battery and other similar experiments from elementary school. For most people, however, that is where their knowledge or electricity and safety precautions ends. Because a wrong move with electricity can be fatal, learning the proper safety precautions is essential.

Depending on your place of work, you may not take much time to think about electrical safety. Most businesses rely heavily on electricity to function in their day to day operations, so it’s somewhat paradoxical that so little time is devoted to understanding its dangerous potential. An electrical safety program can provide your employees with peace of mind even as it saves the company untold sums of money in damages and lawsuits.

Generally speaking, basic safety guidelines can be found in the National Electrical Code. Some of the most common safety mishaps in the workplace involve overloaded circuits and misused extension cords. Each electrical circuit should be meticulously labeled with the exact appliances it serves. Likewise, always check the wire sizes of extension cords to ensure that they can handle the electrical load from a given tool.

safetyeleIt’s easy to overlook all of the potential dangers inherent to a workplace environment. Most of us are preoccupied with business matters such as meetings, presentations and correspondence. As a result, we don’t devote adequate attention to ensuring electrical safety in the office. Although white-collar office settings can harbor all sorts of harm, the real dangers are prevalent in warehouses and other industrial areas.

Anyone who comes into contact with electrical tools on a daily basis should undergo electrical safety training. The best forms of training are those that demonstrate what can happen when people are unfocused or negligent. These shouldn’t be classified as scare tactics; they are merely representations of what could happen in a worst case scenario. The next time you’re on your way to work, think about all the critical knowledge you could gain from a safety presentation.

Many of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of the past few centuries would have been impossible without electricity. From the light bulb to the television to the personal computer, the majority of our household conveniences depend on electrical current to function. As much as electricity has improved our everyday lives, however, it should still be treated with caution.

When electrical current passes through the body, it wreaks havoc in numerous ways. The burns and assorted physical injuries might be most apparent, but the nervous system can effectively shut down following a major electrical shock. With this in mind, it’s crucial to seek out electrical safety tips that can be applied at work and at home. But with a little bit of knowledge and common sense, everyone can avoid unnecessary injuries while performing their electrical jobs and tasks.

There are numerous electricity safety tips, but the most important is that you never let yourself or anyone else play with electrical products. Whether it’s a plug, wire, switch, or cord, electrical products can be and are dangerous. Another important tip is that water and electricity should never mix. One of the best parts about being a parent is being there for your child in order to help them learn and grow. To that end, you should always be there when they have a school project or personal project that requires adult supervision. Especially if that project involves a force that’s powerful and dangerous like electricity, it’s especially important that you’re always present. In these instances, you should also ensure that all proper safety gear is worn.

This gear can be explained and distributed with a basic electrical safety presentation. Either you or another adult you trust can give your children this presentation. This will not only keep them safe for the one specific project, but it will also arm them with the knowledge they need for subsequent projects involving electricity. Even with the safety tips and pointers, however, you should be present until you know your child is old enough and mature enough to perform these projects on their own.
